The Hammer Brings Interactive Light To The Dildo World

Twitter can be such a wonderful place sometimes. I was browsing around, scrolling a moderate pace, when I was stopped dead in my tracks by this glowing beauty.

Of course I piped up and asked what this glorious creation was. As it turns out, this is “the Hammer” (v2 in the tweet above), made by Kit Stubbs Ph.D. Watch the video below to see what the hammer is all about.

The idea of using physical interaction like kegel exercises to control the lights and other effects is pretty wild, I think there is tons of potential there. If you’d like to read the details about v1, which was completed back in 2013, go to toymakerproject.com

The one in the tweet at the top of the post is version 2, so I reached out to find out more. It turns out that many lessons were learned from version 1.

The main changes in v2 are:

– It’s just a shaft (whereas v1 had an insertable bulb). This was because 1) the bulb was intended to sense PC muscle squeezes, but I had mounted the sensor very poorly and there was no way it could really detect them, and 2) the prototype was uncomfortable for me to wear for very long periods of time.

– So, no sensing in v2. But inside the shaft, there are Way More LEDs! Rather than using a flexible LED strip, I used Adafruit Neopixel boards (3 pairs of 2 8-pixel boards plus a single pixel in the tip) for a total of 49 LEDs (more than double v1).

– Rather than pouring silicone directly over the LEDs, I jigged a clear PVC tube inside the mold. The boards can then be removed for repair, if needed. (Hat tip to Jimmie P. Rodgers of jimmieprodgers.com for all of his help with wiring the circuit boards and helping with the jigging.)

Unfortunately, I had to build v2 in a hurry — both of my v1 prototypes crapped out just before I was scheduled to give a sex/tech talk at Burning Man — so I don’t have documentation of that build process. Attached is about the best photo I have of v2 (photo by my husband, Colin McMillen)

Since this was a rushed job, I wondered what was next for the project.

What I’d love to do next: Well, I’m slowly working to get some of these manufactured as a fundraiser for my non-profit, the Effing Foundation for Sex-Positivity.

In terms of the toy itself, I’d love to add an accelerometer (v1 had one but died before I was able to do anything interesting with it). And once the teledildonics patent expires next year, I’d love to have the option to control the lights via smart phone. I’d probably want it to be compatible with buttplug.io. I think Kyle has already reverse engineered the kGoal, so it would be possible to actually light the Hammer up in sync with Kegel exercises that way.

While I was a bit bummed to see that the physical control of the hammer was dropped from V2, Kit’s mention of interfacing with Buttplug.io sounds super interesting.  What kind of feedback would you control with a kegel squeeze? Would you prefer light? How about vibration intensity? Some clever engineering could even make the phallus swell! What a time to be alive.

P.S. Kit (Dr. Stubbs?) If you want help engineering any of those effects, just let me know.
