Steam Powered Vibrator Is As Steampunk As it Gets

3487663015_513992309a_zIf the Hitachi magic wand was created during the industrial revolution, it would look just like this steam powered vibrator. Hand milled/turned by Ani Niow, it’s as steampunk as it gets. She notes that, while it does actually work with steam, it also gets so hot you have to wear welding gloves. Luckily, it also works with compressed air.

the stepped casing has several functions, the first being a form of tactile feedback, the second is so I could machine away layers of them as I got to the size I wanted and the third is because it looks fucking cool.

this is the actual vibrating unit. nothing fancy here, just a piece of metal that's put off to one side. does it work? you betcha. I do need to machine the weight so it vibrates more optimally, less needs to be on the smaller end. will do that next week.

the brass thing sticking out of the vibe is an adaper for a hose in which steam or compressed air would go through. the brass piece with a bunch of holes in it is the engine cap which is threaded into the vibe. the holes are for the exhaust.

The captions above are taken from her Flickr page, where you can find a few more images. She has uploaded a video of it working with compressed air as you can see below. This was apparently after she added a bit of a curve for better ergonomics.

the steampunk vibrator runs!
